Given below are
some of the most remarkable and exciting Roman Ruins in Rome:
Acqua Marcia: Built
between 44 and 42 BC, Acqua Marcia is one of the seven aqueducts of Rome. An
imposing structure that didn’t age gracefully, an important section of it was
being destroyed during the construction of Felice Aqueduct. It was among the
longest of all the 11 aqueducts that supplied the city of ancient Rome.
Standing tall and strong even today the Acqua Marcia along with the Aqua Anio
Vetus, Aqua Anio Novus, and Aqua Claudia comprises of the four great aqueducts
of Rome.
Arch of Constantine: The
famous Arch of Constantine is situated right next to an even more famous
Colosseum and was built on the order of the Roman Emperor Constantine the
Great, in 315 AD. To honor the victory of Constantine the arch was constructed
in 312 AD.
Arch of Titus: Also close
to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum is the Arch of Titus. To commemorate the
victories of Emperor Titus, his smaller brother, the Roman Emperor Domitian
constructed the Arch of Titus. The arch was however inaugurated after the death
of Titus and is embellished with interesting depictions of the spoils of the
Temple of Jerusalem.
Coliseum: Constructed in
70 AD, this fabulous Roman structure is a huge amphitheater that could
accommodate up to 55,000 people and was the scene of many gladiator and animal
fights. No visit to Rome is said to be complete without a visit to the Roman
Colosseum. It is one of the most recognized landmarks in the world and it is an
iconic symbol of ancient imperial Rome. Today, the partially restored Colosseum
was added as a UNESCO World Heritage site and was voted as one of the New Seven
Wonders of the world.
