Lake Superior

Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes and is also America’s largest freshwater lake and the world’s largest by surface area. It covers a surface area of 82,100 sq km roughly the size of South Carolina, and it remarkably contains more water than the other four Great Lakes combined. Nestled between the US states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, and the Canadian province of Ontario.

Lake Huron

Lake Huron has some of the cleanest waters of the Great Lakes and is either the second or third-largest of the lakes. It got its name Huron from the indigenous Huron people inhabiting the area during the 17th century. Its name means “great water” derived from the Ojibwe word Michi-game, meaning the lake gave the state its name and not the other way around. The Lake plays a key role in the development of cities such as Chicago and Milwaukee and is surrounded by Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.

Lake Erie

It got its name from the Native American-Erie people, Lake Erie is the shallowest and the fourth-largest lake by area. It forms another part of the US-Canada border and separates Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York from Ontario. Its natural outflow is responsible for the world’s most famous waterfalls because it is connected to Lake Ontario by the Niagara River.

Lake Ontario

Lake of Shining Waters or Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes by area. However, it still ranks as the world’s 13th-largest lake and it has a greater volume than Lake Erie due to a much greater average depth. Nestled between New York State and Ontario, it serves as the last link in the Great Lakes chain. Saint Lawrence River is its outlet that eventually reaches the Atlantic Ocean.
